BASIC: Elizabeth Arden was born on December 31, 1884. She opened the red doors of her first beauty salon in New York City in 1910. Emphasizing the science behind her products, she was instrumental in making cosmetics respectable. By 1915 she was selling her products internationally. Elizabeth's original name was Florence Nightingale Graham, but in the breakup of her long-term relationship, she changed her name to Elizabeth Arden. Her opening of the salon "Elizabeth Arden", instantly noticeable with her red doors, had become extremely popular. At her death she had currently opened 100 salons with the title of Elizabeth Arden. MOVING TO NEW YORK: Florence began as a helper in a cosmetic shop. When she broke up with her partnership, Florence changes her name to Elizabeth Arden and she opens up a salon. She began to formulate her own cosmetics and selling them at this salon. In 1914 she expands the business and names the salon "Elizabeth Arden". In 1922 she then opens up a salon in France thus entering the European market. MARRIAGE: In 1918, Elizabeth Arden married. Her husband, Thomas Lewis, was an American, and through him she gained American citizenship. Thomas Lewis served as her business manager until their divorce in 1935.
